Song of the Day: Something for Kate - Ordinary World

Today I went to Bridget Jones’s house.

Well, it was the site of her house.. amazingly enough, it is literally 2 blocks from where I work. It looks pretty much the same as it does in the movie. In case you wanted to know, it was filmed at the Globe pub, on the corner of Bedale St and Green Dragon Court. There’s a sign at the front of the pub which talks about its history (apparently Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre was originally opposite) and includes a film credit for Bridget Jones’ Diary.

Also in the film was the Borough Market, which I also visited today (its around the corner from her house). That market is crazy! Similar to Adelaide market, you can get some pretty exotic fare. I tasted some wild board salami (yum) and bought some comfort food in the form of dolmades, cheese and sausages (brandy + pork, and chorizo).

I went to an Italian cheese stall and asked for the smallest most pathetic slice of a really strong cheese you could find. The guy behind the stall was like “you want just this little bit? Are you sure? Hang on I need to make a phone call!” (I wondered if this was another case of UK bureaucracy gone wrong.. did he need managerial approval for the sale?). He speaks in Italian to his friend and tells him this crazy woman has come to the stall to buy twenty five grams of cheese.. he should come and look at how small it is! (He said this all in Italian but amazingly enough, I understood all of it.. guess that WEA course paid off!). I went to pay for the cheese and he waved me away and told me it was free. I guess the size was not much bigger than the samples they give out.

Today brought another round of arguments with Barclays bank (hate hate hate hate hate them!). They’ve taken weeks to give me an account, and after some bungling involving a typo in the Barclays manual for opening new accounts (apparently I can’t have one.. but they promised… so I shouted) I think I finally have one. Well, I have numbers anyway. I deposited some 900 pounds of uncleared cheques and stormed out of there huffily.

Yesterday I went to Toby’s house to get my laptop fixed. The damn modem’s not working (not that I have a net account anyway.. but there are free ones here) but we couldn’t get the bitch to go. I managed to work out my WinTV USB tv tuner so now I have a tv on my laptop.. at full screen, its actually not bad. Yay! In hindsight, it would have been easier to just buy a damn tv set.

So.. I have a job, a house, a bank account, an NI number on its way (not holding my breath..), a tv (sort of), my Sims and it’s a pretty gorgeous day today. (Sunshine, no rain). I only have one thing missing.. but screw it, I think I’ve had enough of that anyway.

Vive le Singledom… Bridget Jones is my hero.
